Tips When Feeding A Baby

Proper way of feeding a baby is an integral part of their development. You may find below several tips when feeding a baby. These are the guidelines I followed when I started feeding my daughter with solid food plus the tips that my mom personally shared to me based on her experience when she raised my 3 brothers and I.

Here are some tips when feeding a baby:

  1. When your baby reaches his fourth month, you can test whether he is ready for “new foods”.  Do this by putting a teaspoon to baby’s lips.  If he tends to close his lips or push the teaspoon away, then your baby is not yet ready.  Never  force him to eat.
  2. Introduce the new food to your baby before breastfeeding or bottlefeeding him.
  3. An ideal starter food is a single food ingredient such as cereal mixed with breastmilk or follow follow-on formula.
  4. Offer only half a teaspoon of food at a time, feed him less than the recommended amount, gradually increasing it until it reaches the amount suited to your baby’s need.
  5. The best time to make him try new food again is the day following his first trial.
  6. Once the child has acquired a taste for the new food, give it to him fairly often and after breastfeeding or bottlefeeding.
  7. Introduce one new food at a time.  New start on two new foods at once.
  8. Give your baby water between feedings.  Water helps regulate water removal and other body functions.
  9. Offer variety in each meal.

  1. i started introducing my babies a baby food like cereals when they were still 3 months old. I mixed it with their milk to keep them full for hours. then when they were 6 months old that’s when i started giving them some pureed vegetables

  2. Having 4 kids, whew! I tried everything. all my kids were breastfeed, the 2 youngest ones stayed being breastfed for the longest time, but they still went through the whole stage of feeding the baby solid food. Tried those baby cereal, Gerber, and mashed veggies and stuff, sometimes when I didn’t have the patience, I just let them breastfed. (Bad momma eh?)

  3. i remember when i used to painstakingly make baby food from scratch for my little man. i’d mash carrots, potatoes and other veggies. our feeding session would often came out well. but it changed when he turned a bit older + started being picky. sometimes i do not know what to feed him anymore. am not a good cook, but i’d love to offer him a wide variety of food to taste other than he’s usual staple…

  4. I am surely done with this first solid food for babies. Before when I became first time mom, I was a bit worried and didn’t know much. Good thing there is a baby doctor that helps us and provides us with information. I made my own homemade baby food as well so it was all fresh. Babies will pretty much tell you whether or not they are ready. 🙂

  5. These are good tips! I have a 6-month-old baby girl and she is in the stage now where cereal are the yummiest. However, it’s hard to give her the food without entertaining her at the same time. But it is so nice seeing her eat all that I prepare for her. 🙂
