Last September 25, I was invited to attend the 4th Jollibee Family Values Awards: Gabi ng Parangal para sa Pamilyang Pilino held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. It was a joyful and honorable celebration that made me more dignified and proud to be a Filipino. Every year, the country’s number one fast-food chain, Jollibee, recognizes the incomparable relationship and generosity of Filipino families through a celebration highlighting the achievements made by outstanding Filipino families in their respective communities.

Hosted by actress Ms. Iza Calzado and Mr. Mikael Daez, Jollibee hailed exceptional eight families coming from different parts of Luzon, and other countries such as Singapore and the United States for their exemplary advocacies that made an impact in their communities.

Special Citation for Persons with Disability (PWDs)
Mr. Octavio and Mrs. Felicite Jean Gonzales with Dakila, Magiting, Marangal and Mayumi of Cubao, Quezon City. Gonzales family has made it their advocacy to raise awareness about autism and offer support to other families who has a loved one with the same condition.
Special Citation for Children
A family from Cavite City was awarded for their various projects and activities for the benefit of children. The Manalaysay family ( Harnin “Tatz” manalaysay, Martha Manalaysay, Cris “Kesz” Valdez and KeruxBonifacioManalaysay) is indeed a proof that family is not limited to blood ties, hence, it is about connection and commitment.
Organizations established for children:
Club 8586 – a Bible study group for young boys and girls. Over the years, the organization grew to offer literacy and values formation programs, sports festivals, and talent enhancement activities, using education to dissuade poor kids from joining gangs.
Championing Community Children (C3) — established by Kesz when he was seven years old. The young boy and his friends raised funds to provide toys, hygiene kits and slippers to poor children.
The Palacio family (Emilio (deceased), Rachel, Michel Anne, Chemil, Merielle, John Emil, Rachel ann, Micah) of Pandacan, Manila generously shares their time and effort to help other families in need. They are active volunteers of the Families and Children for Empowerment and Development (FCED), a non-profit organization that promotes social and economic development in depressed areas in Manila.
The Serrano family (Nestor, Maryann, Pinky Serrano Mainar, Nassam Nestor Samuel, Dannes Nestor Daniel, Neavid Nestor David of Taguig City is a staunch advocate of children’s education. They focus on education for out of school youth and juvenile delinquents.
The Solidum family (Gilmore, Judilyn, Jea Giezl, and Geoffrey Jules) of Pandacan, Manila uses their expertise and talents to educate the public about dengue prevention. The parents are active with the Dengue ReMove Program.

Special Citation for Education
From San Jose, California, the Villa-Wilcox Family (Clif, Melissa, Francesca and Juan) proves that love and generosity know no boundaries. In 2008, they founded Project PEARLS (Peace, Education, Aspiration, Respect, Love, Smiles), that provides educational, scholarship and feeding programs to underprivileged childrenin Bulacan, Manila, and Zamboanga, as well as Dagupan, Caloocan, Guimaras, and Masbate.

Special Citation for the Environment (endorsed by Maynilad Water Services, Inc.)
The Hagad family (Eduardo, Stela Marie and Samantha Mae) bought a property in Daliaon, Davao City. They found out that the area did not have a stable water supply and residents had to walk one kilometer to get water from a communal deep well. They decided to fund and lead the construction of a waterworks system, working with the barangay and other experts so that the community would have access to water.
Special Citation for Minority Groups (endorsed by the Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas)
The Macalintal family of Victoria of Oriental Mindoro received Special Citation for Minority Groups. Alvin, the head of the family, established BalayLakoy, a home center for Mangyan students who live far from the campus.
The top six JFVA winners each received a cash prize of P100,000 (tax-free), a trophy designed by renowned brass sculptor and Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardee Michael Cacnio, P10,000 worth of Jollibee gift certificates, and a Sony home theater. The awardees of the special citations each received P25,000 cash, a plaque, and P3,000 worth of Jollibee gift certificates.

Awardees were chosen from 1,732 entries worldwide which is the highest to date since it started in 2011. The top 15 families were shortlisted and deliberated upon by the 2014 JFVA Board of Judges composed of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman (co-chairpersons), Jollibee Group Foundation President Grace Tan Caktiong, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Director Carmelina Velasquez, Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto, Center for Migrant Advocacy Philippines Executive Director Ellene Sana, parenting and relationship consultant Maribel Sison-Dionisio, Coca-Cola Export Corporation’s Director for Public Affairs and Communications Atty. Adel Tamano, ANC host Edric Mendoza, Jollibee Philippines’ Vice President for Marketing Harvey Ong and Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Ruth Angeles.
