Properly pressure washing your black top driveway lets you clean the surface of the driveway while removing discolorations and stains. Furthermore, a clean and well-maintained driveway will help improve the exterior appearance of your home. All too often, however, homeowners overlook their driveway when performing exterior home maintenance. This can lead to mold, algae and moss, which can cause discoloration and damage to the driveway. Pressure washing your driveway will get rid of these problems and keep the area looking its best.
Step 1: Remove any object, like vehicles or toys, off the driveway. Using a broom, remove the sticks, leaves and other debris off the driveway.
Step 2: If the driveway has grease or oil stains, pretreat them by covering each stain with kitty litter. The litter will absorb the grease and oil. After several hours, sweep the litter into the dustpan. Keep in mind, however, that old grease and oil stains may not be effected by the kitty litter. In this case, you can try to remove the stains by pouring degrease directly on the problem area and waiting for about 10 minutes before scrubbing the stains with a soft-bristle scrub brush.
Step 3: Soak the driveway in a commercial cleaning solution that is safe for use on driveways. Let sit for about 15 minutes. This will help soften and breakup dirt and grime on the driveway.
Step 4: Attach a garden hose to the pressure washer. Refer to the user guide that came with your specific pressure washer model if you’re not sure where to attach the hose. Always keep the washer nozzle as well as the water stream away from animals and people.
Step 5: Turn the PSI of the pressure washer to 3000. Start at the top portion of your driveway and spray the surface. Use an even and steady overlapping stroke while moving down the driveway until you have reached the end.
If you don’t have a pressure washer and don’t want to purchase one, you can rent them tool rental centers and various home improvement stores.
Always ensure you are using the pressure washer properly before beginning the cleaning process. This means reading and following the directions and warnings in the washer’s owner’s manual. Furthermore, never point the pressure washer at anyone as it can cause severe harm. Furthermore, never use a pressure washer on any surface that is already damaged or weak since the force of the water can cause more harm than good.
